A great show and plans in the works for 2010!
Hats off to everyone who helped make the 2009 Port of Toledo Wooden Boat Show a great success!! For the 5th year, the Wooden Boat Show brought together a great collection of wooden boats and all kinds of activities to celebrate the craft and recreational aspects of wooden boats.
Forty wooden boat owners exhibited their beautiful boats and dozens of boaters participated in the Yaquina Run-Off, Poker Paddle and boat rides in Depot Slough. Six families built their own boats over the weekend. Under the guidance of Carl Chamberlin, master boat builder from Port Townsend, and with help from Rick Johnson, Noah Johnson and Thom Frazier, six "Nuf"s were launched on Sunday afternoon by their proud builders. Amazing creations came out of the toy boat building activity area – 240 boats assembled by children with great imaginations!
Musical entertainment was on stage all day Saturday. Groups included The New Folksters, Sons of the Beaches, Perpetua, ,Kelly Thibodeaux and Etouffee, Mamidou Thioub with his African Drumming Group, and Love Trucker . Over 20 people took part in the free fiddle work shop given by Kelly Etouffee. As always, the music at the Wooden Boat Show is a highlight of the whole festival.
This year, the Port introduced the Poker Paddle on Sunday. Based on the positive response, next year the Poker Paddle will be held on both Saturday and Sunday. It was fun for serious and amateur boaters. Pirates and potato cannons added to the fun and boat rides were offered by the Kids Zone of Depoe Bay and the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club to anyone who wanted to get out on the water.
All in all, it was a wonderful Wooden Boat Show- the Port of Toledo’s small town, easy-going event where there is something for everyone.
